Regius Cigars & Robusto Review

Filed under Cigar Reviews, Product News {no comments}

I feel compelled to support this brand, they made a brave move, A VERY brave move. Many people in the UK and im guessing elsewhere, have this idea that Non-Cuban cigars are lower quality and poorer smokes. This of course is nonsense, they taste different but so do many Cubans. Finding a really good quality “New World” cigar is a little more tricky, this I feel is where people fall foul. They see cheaper priced Nicaraguans and more higher priced, often they try the cheaper. So when Regius came along with 4 cigars, each a different blend. It had to be both ballsie and spectacular cigars.

I first smoked the Corona, a light but enjoyable cigar. Read the review here

I later smoked the Robusto, but due to lack of time and a ever mounting list of things to do I haven’t written them up yet. Below is a short summary of my experience.

Regius – Robusto

Rolled in : Nicaragua
Wrapper : Nicaraguan
Binder : Nicaraguan
Filler : Nicaraguan
Size: 4 7/8 ″ x 50

Construction 9/10
The cigar looks well made, a little firm but ready to smoke. Rich and strong aroma, very fine teeth to wrapper. Cut was easy, not bitty bits in my mouth. Lighting easy, draw perfect and all round well made cigar.

Burn 7/10
Did go a little sideways again, this time not as noticeable compared to the Corona. No bitter, harsh or hot moments. The ash hung on well(better than i can while climbing), keeping the smoke cool and smooth.

First Half 7/10
A smooth and slightly creamy start. Hints of pepper, herbs, chocolate and licorice well balanced with a strong tobacco flavour. The burn went funny around the 1/2 mark, but didnt seem to effect the smoke too much. Certainly got a lot more power and personality over the Corona.

Second Half 8/10
Wow the brakes came off in the second half, after a bit of touch lighting. A lot more power, kicking with nicotine and big bold earthy flavours. The creaminess and any subtlety gone without a trace.  More herby, peppery flavours and loud too. It did feel a little static at points but then subtle hints of coffee, cedar and licorice came through. By the end, plenty of nicotine had been released and i was  a happy man.

Overall 7.8/10
Well not a bad smoke, not a D4 but certainly one of the better Nicaraguan Robustos. Plenty of flavour and power, nicely balanced. A few static parts in the later half but never boring to smoke.  If your looking to try something different to the Cuban selection, give Regius a try, you`ll be surprised.

I still have the other 2 vitolas to smoke, i will get round to them at some point but i have a pile waiting for me. A few customers have tried these and i have had good feed back on them. You can purchase a gift pack of all 4 sizes, from Gauntleys and many other specialist tobacconists in the UK.  You should all try at lest one of the range, there is something for everyone.

With these being 100% Nicaraguan puros, im hoping they age well. A few too 5 years, should really bring out the complexities on the Robustos. Will have to get another gift pack to stash away for a while. Or heck even 2 one for 3 years and one for 5. (Check back in 2014 & 2016 to find out)
