Burley With or Without Smoke (Pt1)

Filed under Pipe Tobacco Reviews, Styles of Tobacco, Videos {no comments}

Following on from the Cavendish videos in my series on Base Tobaccos. I am now trying to explain the differences with Burley both sun & fire cured. Armed with  Burley & Kentucky (fire cured Burley) from Gawith Hoggarth, i smoke them pure in both pipe and cigarette. Up first Burley

Mr Webb in 1864 in Ohio. The tobacco is cured much like a cigar & as a result the tobacco is stronger, less sweet, cooler and smoother. Can be used in any style of pipe tobacco, rolling tobacco & cigarettes.

Producer – Gawith Hoggarth
Product – Burley
Tobacco – Burley
Cut – Fine Shag Cut

In a pipe

  • Cocoa aroma unlit
  • Has a cigarette like flavour (well der)
  • Chocolate notes on the finish, with a creamy texture. Reminds me of Dutch cigars a little too
  • Cool & smooth with a good nicotine balance
  • Too flat to smoke neat
  • Take a few mins of nursing to get going, but once its going burns very well.
  • Becomes a lot like a Connecticut wrapped cigar. Subtle spices and sweet cedar

In a cigarette (hand rolled)

  • Burns slow in a medium weight paper, thinner (OLD) shag cut
  • Strong smoke, but lacks the complex & subtle flavours found in the pipe
  • Has the distinct dry & creamy smoke of most cigarettes/rolling tobaccos
  • Needs some brightness from Virginias or fire cured leaf really
