Overvibe
To kick off tonight we have Overvibe’s debut live performance! Having heard and reviewed Overvibe’s album over 6 months ago, it has been a long wait for Simon to get the right members in to perform Overvibe’s songs live but sometimes patience is a great thing!
The set kicks off with powerful, heavy guitars, booming drums and deep bass and from the first song there is loads of energy and balls behind every note. On record I had compared Overvibe to band’s such as U2, Depeche Mode and The Prodigy but live they are a little different with the electronic edge being substituted for a real heavy rock sound, which though it still has the 80’s rock elements has more in common with bands like Queens of the Stone Age or Foo Fighters and at times even passes over to a more metal sound such as Killing Joke.
The guitar riffs are absolutely awesome and really really catchy and powerful with the two guitars and bass playing off each other very nicely and with the tight drumming, the energy coming out the speakers is immense. Simon also has one of those voices which just rocks, it is very clearer with catchy vocal hooks and patterns and yet has a growling emotional menace behind it which is full of passion.
You could tell that the boys were maybe a little nervous as it took a few songs to relax and start moving around more but for a debut show this was impressive, very impressive….I think Overvibe are gonna cause quiet a storm on the local scene in 2007!

King Claw
Next up are another band who haven’t played much as of yet! King Claw take the stage however with some very familiar faces on board, with half The Stoatz and former Neon Set vocalist, Neil, making up the band.
The sound they produce is also very very powerful mixing Led Zeppelin style 70’s rock n roll riffs with a more Pink Floyd style vocal and then randomly shifting into King Crimson style prog rock!
The guitar riffs are really beefy and there is a major 70’s influence in their sound but with good presence and some interesting mixes of style, King Claw were another very impressive band who I will also be watching closely over the next few months!

Idiot Joy
Finally to end the night we have Idiot Joy, now this band have been around the Nottingham scene for a good while but this was my first time seeing them live…and again this band didn’t disappoint!
Idiot joy are one band who you can’t label….or stick in any certain genre! Mixing 70’s soul and funk with more modern drum n bass, 70’s rock with punk and even some country in it at times, they certainly have a unique style. The one thing I will say is it is consistently upbeat and fun.
If I had to compare it to anything I would say Idiot Joy are like a modern version of The Doors, flowing melodies, tight and beefy drum n bass sections and weird, random and trippy vocal hooks and patterns, they got everyone moving and bought a great night to an excellent end.
