Chris M: We should probably have more of an exciting story behind it… basically we were pissed and Tommy tried to say poncho and it came out as Fonchero, we decided that it was a word the described nothing about our music and so kept it as the band name…
Tommy: We checked it in Google, it's not even a word, but now it is…
Chris M: Yeah, we don't want a record deal, we just wanna get 'Foncheros' in the dictionary, that's all.
Chris: How we got together was quite strange, it all just fit into place. We knew David through a friend of ours…
Russ: Yeah this lot rescued me from the wreckage of Left Of The Dealer.
Chris: Tommy and Chris M used to be in a band called Bosco, who split early last year, and I'd known Chris M since college, bumped into him one night and went from there.
Chris M: Yeah, he told me he could play drums…I didn't believe him…still don't.
Steph: I know all of you are involved in other projects and bands, tell us a little about those.
Chris M: I was in a few cover projects before Christmas with my brother Nick, and was in a band called Team Hughes, but when I got this together, I was too busy to do that as well as uni work, so outside of this band, I just do my solo stuff now.
David: I had an album released in France with a band I played acoustic guitar and melodica for, and now I play piano. I've also got solo music…I'm basically trying to take over myspace at the moment.
Chris: I've got another band, New Generation Superstars, which is fast punk rock n roll, Foncheros is the other end of the scale, so it's kind of one extreme to the other, but I just love playing and it's really good to be involved in a couple of completely different scenes.
Tommy: I play in Team Hughes and also Nottingham hip-hop band 1st Blood.
Russ: I have my solo stuff, but that's filtering more and more into this band, I recently played session guitar for a female vocalist, she had one of the most phenomenal voices I've heard.
Steph: How often have you gigged since you started? Have you gotten out of Nottingham? And what sort response do you get from your live shows?
Chris: We played our first one at the back end of last year, it was just me, Chris M, Tommy and James, who's no longer in the band. We've played acoustic shows where it's been the stripped down basics, playing to different audiences. I think this year we've done about 9 gigs so far around Nottingham, we've been out of town once…Warsop…a surprisingly vibrant music scene…
Russ: Well that's 'cos there's nowhere else to go but The Blackmarket for anyone who likes live music., big up to David Dury, the music scene in Warsop is all down to him really.
Chris: The live response has been really good, we've got people waiting on recordings, we should probably get that sorted out…but it's the sort of music that appeals to everyone, we don't stick to one genre, we come from all sorts of backgrounds, lots of different styles.
David: We're playing in the Arboretum on the 28th, which is an outdoor show and also at The Cabaret on the 31st, so the gigs are coming in quite a bit, we're never short of one.
Steph: Tell us more about the recording then, how's it going?
Chris: We got a phone call from Confetti Studios this week actually, saying they've got some students who's end of year project it is to record a band and master it etc. So from that we'll get a demo, but we'll see how it goes…at the minute Chris M does a lot of home recording, so we have copies of the rehearsals, nothing wrong with a bit of DIY. If people wanna hear what we do, there's a video on myspace taken at The Maze, which I think is a good representation.
Steph: Ok cool. What are the plans for Foncheros over the next 3-6 months?
Chris M: Get the recording done, obviously more gigs, we wanna organise some more of our own gigs too, as well as trying to score some down in London…anywhere anytime really
Russ: I'm a big believer in not turning down a gig…
Tommy: More crates of Finkbrau!
Steph: Shout outs? Anyone you wanna big up?
