Lo Fi Jack Interview

KG- So what is the process of your music making? Lyrics or music first?

I am immediately met with a chorus of 'Music definitely' and a sense in the air of a young band excited for things to come.

'The lyrics always come second'

When you finally get to the writing stage what are the main influences for what you write about?

Martin laughs as he says 'anything we know' suggesting not very much but we just have to look at any one given song to see that this band knows what they are talking about. They show sense in what they sing and deliver us a meaningful montage as so many bands fail to do. Colin adds to Martin's contribution telling me 'a lot of the songs are about drinking and partying'

As you grew up who influenced you the most to get into music yourself?

'Erm Oasis. Stuff like that' says Colin showing the initial indie influences.

'For me it's John Fruscinante. Foo fighters' explains Martin.

What would you say your influences are now, have they changed?

'Right now it's got to be Biffy clyro, Reuben, Tool. Stuff like that' Martin tells me as Colin nods in agreement.

Obviously Nirvana is an influence but newer bands such as Nine Black Alps seem to have some impact into your style. What is it about them you like?

This definitely seems a topic to get them talking.

'Aah they're just so gnarly and powerful. Raw. Punk. Amazing. It was like nothing new around was good and we were just waiting for something like Nine Black Alps to come. It was fresh and no one else had done anything like it for a while'

Fresh is indeed what is needed and this band have took that and plunged into the sea of music delving out the old trash and bashing it into shape.

Are there any other new bands you like right now?

'Not really. It's all pretty much the same'

Colin aims at one band in particular 'I hate the rakes. They're so annoying and crap'

What is it like to have the metal influence from Brad your drummer?

'Well we have kick ass drumming. Makes us sound gnarly. The drummer we had before Brad was too quiet'

Have you got round to recording anything yet?

'Yeah we have a 5 track demo' Colin tells me. 'It's soon to be sent out to whoever wants it'

Any plans to get signed? Have you had any talks at all yet?

'Well I'd like to have at least two albums worth before I think about that. It would be great'

A local label?

'Yeah a local label at first when we have enough material. When it comes it comes'

What do you think to recent bands that are in it just for the image?

'We hate bands that only care what they look like and don't concentrate on the music leaving the music crap. We're just in it for the music. Maybe we don't care about image too much maybe but it's just the music. If you can't do it don't do it. Don't make a prick of yourself'

After a chat about proposed plans for the day I ask about upcoming gigs.

Check out Lo-fi Jack at the following venues:

As I ask the band to join me on the brown couch the running horse occupies, as Zane Lowe does on Gonzo Mtv2, I ask where the drummer is to be told he headed home meaning I wouldn't be getting any jokes as he is the usual joker in the 'pack of cards' 'Brad's a fighter' explains Martin. Naturally I ask who the joker is when he is not around. 'Well we all try and get in the mood. Rehearsals are always fun' With the band's personality out the way I quickly move onto the music.
