The Dead City Presidents – Have Gun WIll Travel

After seeing this band live at Junktion 7 last month I was looking forward to hearing this new extended 7 track offering. It comes in with a soft opening that builds wonderfully with soaring melodies, strong drum and bass and soft strings. This track, Atlanta, grows with layered sounds and growing, pulsating energy and sets up the E.P brilliantly before making way for the dynamic second track. Minus starts with a brilliant guitar riff before moving into a more upbeat and energetic feel with great harmonies and dynamic, with a mixture of post-hardcore, ambient rock and grunge influences. The guitars are so well interlinked through out this recording and with a high standard of production it stays very impressive. The thing that stands out for me about The Dead City Presidents is their natural ability to build emotion in each song, with diverse sounds, intergrating riffs, strong drumming and some beautiful melodies. Tom Walsh's vocal seems to slip very easily from soft shouts to moving harmonies and with a mass of depth this is one of the best recordings I have heard in ages! I love the fact ever song seems to run into the next, with more instrumental tracks like Have Gun will travel, Interlude and the opening Atlanta helping this process. Ever track still stands on its own as impressive, whilst as a album it rocks! Later the use of samples in the awesome Inspired by a Killer and the final epic track The Great British Suburbia add even more atmosphere, emotion and power to the bands sound. This band surely will be making waves across the city over the coming months and are certainly one of the names to watch in 2007.
