Inter-locking riffs, beautiful melodic vocals, crazy drum fills and songs charged so full of emotion Im scared its gonna overloaded my speakers and is about to start a nuclear explosion. And so starts the new EP from Thisisthewaytheworldends.
Theme From Asthma kicks straight in with catchy riff based on a nice scale not too dissimilar to early Offspring but with not quite as much of a punky feel, this is just the first of many influences you can hear in Thisisthewaytheworldends music. After this initial burst of energy the vocal breaks in and the guitar and bass chill out into a verse that reminded me of Radiohead during The Bends era, or maybe Muse. With some really interesting drums (which is not something I often get to say) and nice crunchy guitars, there is really nice movement in Thisisthewaytheworldends work. Throw in some brilliant tempo changes and swift and varied dynamics and you have almost a perfect start to any demo, especially when you consider this first song is 7 minutes long! With a song this good you wouldn’t mind if it was longer!
Second song Vertigo starts again with a very catchy riff this time a bit more of a modern indie feel, similar to some of the current Indie acts on the commercial scene. The well-placed and varied vocals are a bit shoutier and rough this time but again there is a excellent use of dynamics. With this vocal style it was hard to make out all the lyrics at times but Vertigo has a catchy hook line (‘I’m never coming down’) and the band show that its not only the vocals, drums and guitars that they are skilled with as they break down with some beautiful and funky bass soloing. Thisisthewaytheworldends are about as predictable as the British weather. The riffs are progressive and change from heavy power sequences to emotional soft melodic picking within seconds.
Again track three continues to show how strong the band is, with very catchy and melodic slice of indie rock. The weave the instruments together like a silk worm making the most beautiful of dresses. It is another very tight song that builds up in emotion the longer it goes on, making you feel like they are live in your bedroom, just close your eyes and let the music take your mind on a magical ride.
Serotonin is probably the heaviest song yet with a guitar that screams like a beautiful banshee and a melodic vocal line that flies overhead like a sky full of stars. The changes are beautifully worked once again and suddenly I hear the whole other side to Thisisthewaytheworldends. They mix the emotionally melodic and musical perfection of Radiohead with the musical genius and heavy funkiness of At The Drive-in. Their music is catchy but really shows musical science at its best.
The final track (untitled) once again shows how diverse Thisisthewaytheworldends are. Instead of the great Indie Emo punk rock magic that we had been used too, this final track comes in with almost a Dub, Reggae feel and then breaks into a guitar solo that most sixties guitar legends (I.E Jimmy Page or Hendrix) would be proud of. The drummer again, uses this as a chance to show his skills and breaks into a rampant army of drum fills. This final song is a music theorists wet dream it shows dynamics, tempo changes, all instruments show some great technical skills and even if it goes on a bit to long for some peoples liking, it shows beyond any doubt what the other 4 songs had pretty much already proved.
Thisisthewaytheworldends are musically brilliant. They have a great range of dynamics and genre variety to their music and all members are of the highest order on their chosen instrument. I think this band really have something pretty special and have taken the emotional indie rock influence of the 90’s and given it a real progressive emo-punk feel of themusic that has been on the scene so far this decade. If they can keep evolving, pushing barriers and mixing up the variety of genre shown on this offering Thisisthewaytheworldends could be something very, very exciting. I just hope the world doesn’t end too soon, because I’d like to hear some more out of this lot first!
