Epoche Interview

Epoche have been in the making for a while now but with several line up changes and name changes it has only been recently that they have seemed to find a sound and line up which they can comfortably move the band forward with. We went to the release party for their new E.P to find out about the story so far and what the future holds for Epoche

Epoche Are: Phil Tietjen – guitar/vocals

Kostantino Kyrris – Lead guitar

Thom Millington – Bass

Max – Drummer

JoOp: We're at the 'Epoche' E.p. launch night at the Old Angel and they've just acquired a new drummer, so it's a double whammy for you guys, how's the new line up workin' out for you?

Thom: Well, we got tight really quickly and yeah.

Kostantino: We were looking for a drummer for a long time, the right drummer which we never had and the more drummers we've had the better it's got, it's got to the point where we've got the right guy.

JoOp: Cool, how long have you been around now?

Phil: Since september 2003, August 2003-ish.

Thom: That was the original line-up.

Phil: Yeah yeah, it keeps changing. It's changed loads.

JoOp: Have you gigged lots in Nottingham then?

Phil: Yeah and no like, we've done a fair few gigs, but losing drummers and stuff when you're doing something and losing bass players…

JoOp: When did you lose the drummer?

Phil: First drummer we lost like about a year after we started, well no about 8 months and we've just lost a drummer 8 weeks ago, mysteriously someone ran him over, green car! – so Max has only been in it 8 weeks.

JoOp: What does 'Epoche' mean in your terms?

Kostantino: A time frame, a season, an era.

JoOp: An age.

Phil: A point in the year time is measured from. Also it's a state of mind, where you don't do anything unless prompted. Theory of Aristotle and it's like you don't answer the phone or talk on it unless someone rings you and if they ask you to come out they've prompted you.

JoOp: aaah right.

Thom: We're a seasonal band.

JoOp: It says on your website that this gig will give people an insight into where the band's heading, for the people that couldn't make it tonight, where art thou headin'… If you remember putting that on your website lol!

Phil: I remember hehe.

Thom: It's just gonna get wierd, experimental and heavier.

Phil: It already is a bit experimental…

Thom: More Melodic, louder, faster, etc..

JoOp: How would you describe your sound, providing the whole music genre system didn't exist? So if you weren't slotted, pigeon holed into a genre how would you describe yourself in your own words?

Thom: Can't really pigeon hole us anyway.

JoOp: But people will, you know that, like bigger mainstream magazines.

Phil: People are gonna pigeon hole us somewhere.

JoOp: How would YOU describe yourself in your own words? You can be as creative as you want.

Phil: Edgy.

Kostantino: Melodic. Lot of different sides.

Phil: Expressive.

Kostantino: Progressive, it's always gonna go somewhere else.

JoOp: So it's constantly changing then. wicked, Gigged or toured outside of Nottingham? – errrm have you?

((laughter is heard))

Kostantino: Nice sentence arrangement! We've gigged in Germany as part of a course.

Thom: Yeah we're going over again in January.

JoOp: A festival or a little tour?

Phil: It's part of a college course.

JoOp: What's the next big thing coming your way? In the ways of oppurtunity…

Kostantino: Tonight, The E.p.. We just need more material, get more material out, gig alot and get the name out.

JoOp: So no big showcase gig coming up?

Phil: Again like having Max come in at this stage, we're having to re-evaluate everything and making it happen tonight was really difficult. So in a fair few weeks our effort has gone into that, so it's only been the last few weeks that we've sent out promo-packs and information so we're waiting for them to get back to us.

JoOp: It's good that you're getting your stuff out there, right, shoutouts and messages to your following…

Phil: Thankyou so much for supporting us as it goes, and baring with us as we get really good and lose people, and then come back up to that point again!

JoOp: We're still here, in case you were wondering ;).

Kostantino: Our family aswell, they've been really supportive.

Phil: Demetri and Andy Oakley, big the guy up to fuck! – he worked with us on the E.p. for about 9 months or something, he's been in the making and he's helped us with so much stuff. Re-evaluating the sound and like he's been around alot more than us as a sound tech, he's really good and knows alot about all the different styles, he's seen it all.

JoOp: Bit of a handy person to know hey?

Phil: Definately, if you listen to him, he's never got anything stupid to say.

JoOp: What about bands that you've toured with? That you've liked gigging with.

Phil: 'Black Lodge(???)' is the only band we've really clicked with.

JoOp: cool, and we're done with the interview cheers!
