For those of you who have never been to The Old Angel, here is a quick round up, it’s smelly, dark, dusty and loud. Tonight’s first band, I Decay (or is it I.D.K), suit the venue to a tee. They are a loud, angry, angst-filled bunch of longhaired, slightly insane looking geezers.
They seem quite young but their lack in age doesn’t stop them producing a huge sound and providing us with a very lively and professional 45 minutes of blood curdling screams mixed with ear bleeding guitar solos, which were held together well by a tight bassist.
The two vocalists fed off each other, one using a low throaty growl, and the other screaming like a demented banshee.
Both guitarists showed some awesome skill, interchanging their solos and providing some entertaining stage antics (one of the guitarist’s severely injured his leg by throwing his body off the stage like a cream pie to a clowns face.)
For a young metal band I Decay showed a lot of promise and some amazing technique, but it was the drumming that caught our attention, taking their music and injecting diversity.
With a few more dynamics and better use of emotional build-up, I Decay could grow into something pretty special. They have raw talent and lots of energy, if this music is your bag, then these guys are a must see.
So to Tolerance, tonight’s headliners who have some well travelled faces, with the former bassist of Third Opium war, the drummer from Menz Raya and Zero from BFG on guitar, synth and vocals. Tolerance kicked straight in with their heavy brand of no nonsense, grungy rock n roll. Using some interesting synth intros, with a definite 80’s influence, before crashing into some beefy and catchy guitar riffs, which were held together well by a really tight and professional drummer. The bassist was all over the place, concentrating a little too much sometimes on jumping around, and sometimes missing a few notes, he covered up well though, and with the sheer professionalism of the other two members, it didn’t matter. Their sound was really strong, powerful, and crunchy which reminded me of Therapy? at times but with a slightly less random feel. These guys know what they’re doing, putting on an energetic show with driving, infectious songs, that truly rocked ass!
