On first are Manichae, I’m never a good labeller of bands – but I would describe Manichae as kinda heavy rock with more than a hint of metal. The first thing that struck me about the band is how melodic the vocals were, the singer kept them varied but always with a nice tone and melody – at times he kinda reminded me of Chris Cornell. The first two songs Devil Within and Follow were two great songs to start with, they then followed this with a track which I didn’t catch the name of but it had a nice groove to it and the tempo would build through the song and then it would slow down again only to build back up to a sudden climax! Very nice set tonight, the only thing that struck me was the band lacked a rhythm guitarist – but it was pointed out later that their rhythm guitarist had a prior engagement with the porcelain god and couldn’t be reached.

Up next – The Dead Souls. Again – me and labels are kinda like me and dancing (I can try to do it but 9 times out of 8 I end up looking like an arse) but if I had to put this band into a category i’d say they were a grunge band in the veins of Puddle Of Mudd, Nirvana, Bush etc. This band were excellent tonight – each song seemed to have so much energy to it and the gritty vocals really blended well. The bassist tonight supplied some occasional backing vocals, which fitted nicely, and for one song he took lead vocal for the chorus, which worked really well. In short – this band rocked.

Finally tonight – Tolerance. I’m not even going to try and label the band. This band isn’t afraid to experiment with different sounds and tonight a few songs featured some electronic accompaniment played by the lead singer which added a few nice touches to some of the songs although sometimes it seemed a little out of place. The drumming tonight from Tolerance’s drummer was excellent, constantly changing and with some impressive use of the bass drum. Also tonight the band played a cover of a 50 Cent song, which just has to be heard, and the crowd loved it! Another excellent band! Tonight was an excellent night with 3 great bands, thanks to the Saggy Pants team for organising it and best of luck for the future, and yes I managed to resist the charms of the pear cider!! The next Saggy Pants gig is Friday September 23rd at The Boat Club with Weeble, Jonny No Stars, Jimmy The Squirrel and Breakneck. Click for more Info
