PIANO By the end of this bands set we were quite impressed, despite them being so obviously Glassjaw influenced, but I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. A little bit of the same-ol’-same-ol’ “screamo” sound, but very well rounded and energetic. With flowing bass riffs and crunchy guitar riffs that got your head moving, they were popular with the crowd. Their lyrical and vocal complexity and sophistication was the impressive part and they brought this across very well.

SEX JONES These guys had catchy lyrics and echoed the sound of indie bands such as Haven and early Coldplay, that’s is to say they conformed with todays commercial indie, and were relaxing without being uninteresting. The bassist was exceptional, although he lacked stage presence, you could only find this guy if you were looking for him. The guitarist also displayed plenty of talent, but as if to make up for the bassist he decided to get down on his knees whilst playing, which is fine, but perhaps not for every single song.

MANPLAYINGKAZOO Like the bassist from SEX JONES this bassist was devoid of presence (who created all the shy bassists?) but not without talent. The vocalist, although having a strong voice, stayed well within his comfort zone, which unfortunately made their sound seem monotonous. However their music was certainly that which you would dance to when you’re out, being a sort of happy and positive metal sound, perhaps reflecting an upbeat Faith No More. With very good crowd interaction, their set was very enjoyable.

NOVEMBER MOMENT These guys kept to an appropriate level of stage presence chirping up occasionally between songs. With a stunning high ringing guitar sound and defined drums this was the sort of music you bite your lip, close your eyes and nod your head to (or is that just me?). Definite air guitar qualities anyway. More of an American influence in music for these fellows, simplified representation of A Perfect Circle and possibly Filter. NOVEMBER MOMENT’s set started a little shakily but improved as it went on, although this could have been too late for the judges.
The Rescue Rooms was the ideal setting for this event, with just enough room to squeeze everybody in and an array of cheap drink on show. The judges were within the crowd, so as not to miss any of the atmospheres each band created. Their final decision was to give the honour to the very deserving NOVEMBER MOMENT. It was certainly a tough decision and not one I could have made each band certainly left their impression and the event was a credit to Nottingham University’s music scene.
