Junktion 7’s Battle Of The Bands Final ManPlayingKazoo + Swound! + Weeble + Hinterland 2004

September 15, 2004

ManPlayingKazoo’s bid for the title was defiantly a serious one, well the music was anyway, and they pulled out all stops to make sure that this was a gig to remember. They put plenty of energy into a well practised and livelyOO performance, which, of course, was fully expected from them. So they lived up to those hopes musically, and they didn’t let us down with their purposefully crap jokes, and the ever creative ‘Little Jeffy’ Ep plug by guitarist Chris, that never fails to induce a few larfs amongst the audience and band alike

Next into the ring and never to be upstaged, were Swound! displaying their new guitarist for all to see, and he slotted in, like he never had to slot in, and was there all along. This was a pretty good job really because I don’t particularly think Swound! were ever gonna slow down or come to any compromise just because of a new member. Stating quite clearly that they were coming to get us, and that “EVERYONE’S GONNA DIE!” they reeled off familiar song after familiar song and each one a crowd stomping anthem. Their bid was in and surely the judges would be drunk enough by now to be jumping around with the rest of us.

Its was Weeble’s turn to fill the stage, and fill it they usually do, with a cast of 7 members including a 3 man strong brass section, the Junktion 7 walls were bulging with the noise level coming out of the big black thing next to my right ear. Weeble know how to get an audience riled up, and they used that to their full advantage. They were straight into their set, no messing around, and they didn’t especially mess around throughout their slot, it was just rammed with songs and if you weren’t skanking, you weren’t there.

God damn it! It’s Hinterland again! Having only just managed to get their choruses out of our heads from their semi final last week we are exposed to them again. But hey, we don’t wanna sound like we’re complaining here, there ain’t nothin’ wrong with a catchy number, and Hinterland have a set full of them. Perfected rhythm and timing, and non stop distortion and flourish filled drumming, go together to make their show a powerful sweat fest, you couldn’t help yourself, and having spilt your last beer of the night, carried on bashing stuff anyway, cos you knew in your heart of hearts, that it wasn’t really your last.

There you go I told you it would be rubbish, but at least you know who was in it. Do you wanna know who won? Well so do I. {Rummaging through notes} Ah! Yes! Runners up firstof the Junktion 7 BOTB 2004 (don’t know why I’m doing this, you’ve probably seen it already)…Hinterland!! whoo!

But, do you wanna know the winners? The outright winners?…WEEBLE!!!!

WHOOOOO!!!! Congrats to Weeble, hope you enjoy all that studio time, and the photoshoot and the Jagermeister (is that everything?) ooh and spending money I’m sure there was some of that. But I’m sure you find the half a toaster with your name on it useful.

There were some other awards given out tonight, best musicians, and they were as follows…
