Having been around a few years, Patchwork Grace are now becoming a very professional and well performed act even though they are still a fairly young band. With masses of attitude, a sexy, glammed up image and a interesting glam, punk sound, they have started to get some real attention lately.
With regular gigs across the Midlands and further a field lined up in the next 6 months and support slots with bands like The Fight as well as past slots with Adam Bomb and Trashlight Vison, Patchwork Grace have been getting rave reviews around the country from the likes of Virgin Radio and the BBC. We went to find out how the band are reacting to all the good press and where they see themselves going in the next year.

Interview – JoOp
JoOp: Right I do apologise if I’m not on the ball, I had a heavy night yeseterday and early practice this morning! So, right yeah, you’ve just played the rescue rooms, the Julie Cotton foundation charity, how do you think it went for you?
Crispin: Personally I thought it was shit hot!
Tori: It was brilliant.
JoOp: You? *points to Scott*
Scott: I thought it was mint, Loved it!
Crispin: I thought Tori did well because she’s been ill recently and we had to play a 3-piece set the other night.
JoOp: How long have you guys been together now, and how far do you think you’ve come?
Crispin: Current line up… Well over 6 months.
Joey: It was the 10th of June, Scotts first gig.
Crispin: But the actual band has been together, 2 years in January. But we’ve had line up changes, Joey joined on bass last January… no this january gone.
JoOp: Where do you want to take the band, realistically? cos I usually get ‘All the way baby’ and shit like that…
Crispin: I want to take the band errrm.. up the bum-hole…
JoOp: That’ll do… (sigh)… That it?
Crispin: We’d just like to, not nessarcarily be the biggest band in the world. But just be able to make enough money to be able to do it as a living. Not saying I don’t want to be the biggest band in the world, I wouldn’t mind but aslong as I have enough money to do it as a living basically.
Scott: Absolutely.
JoOp: Hell yeah, what kind of response have you got from your E.p? – and where can we grab a copy?
Crispin: Downstairs..
((Everyone Laughs))
JoOp: First question first!
Crispin: We got really good response actually.
Tori: We got quite a few reviews of it and not one of them has been a bad one has it yet?
Crispin: And they’ve just played one of our tracks down in the rockcity basement.
JoOp: Cool, How would you describe your music? – Given that the Genre system didn’t exist.
Joey: Well then you’ve got nothing to compare it to then, have you?
JoOp: Well I mean *Ahem* just describe it in words, instead of saying ‘Ooh I’m Grunge’ or whatever…
Joey: Sleazy…
Crispin: Crip rock!
Tori: It’s just a sort of… We don’t take it seriously as in we practice every single day with our guitars and we sit for hours writing songs n’ stuff – speaking for myself by the way! It’s just fun.
JoOp: What’s the plan for 2006?
Crispin: To keep on doing what we’re doing really. Just gigging and trying to get to as many different places as we can!
JoOp: Band reccommendations from bands you’ve played with?
Crispin: ‘Trash light vision’
Joey: Awesome band.
Crispin: Probably the best live act that I’ve seen.
JoOp: Where are they from?
Crispin: America, they’re very very good. They just get better and better everytime you see them.
JoOp: anyone else?
Tori: Dip!
JoOp: What do you think to the unsigned community in Nottingham? Do you think this whole segment of the music scene gets publicised enough?
Tori: No
Joey: No
JoOp: No?
Tori: It doesn’t get enough publicity and I don’t think it gets enough encouragement.
JoOp: mm… Exactly. they cover the bands that are already up there rather than the bands on this level…
Tori: It’s really difficult, it’s like Rock city.. If Rock city did nights say in the main room, where they got several unsigned bands on.. I don’t think they’d have a problem getting people in.
JoOp: They want to know for sure, that they can rake the money in…
Crispin: In Derby it’s kind of the opposite, they do have big bands play in Derby, but alot of the venues put kinda younger, unsigned bands on. To like give them a chance and we started off doing that at the Vic Inn in Derby, then just kinda built it up from there.
Tori: You’re doing them a favour at the end of the day aswell, if they help you, you help them.
Scott: Alot of under 18’s want to come and see you but alot of venues don’t let them in.
Crispin: Yeah we played the Cabaret the other week, alot of our friends got turned away.
JoOp: So do you think being a young band, you get discriminated maybe?
Joey: Some people don’t take us seriously.
Tori: Yeah.
Crispin: I don’t think we really get discriminated against, sometimes some venues will say you’ve got to bring in a certain amount of people but they’ve got to be over 18 and because we’re young the majority of our following are aswell. Good turn out tonight though.
JoOp: Covered alot of age range, didn’t it. Right… errm, shout outs then! – any shout outs you wanna give to people or bands that you haven’t already mentioned?
Crispin: I would like to tell everyone to go see Dip, listen to there song called ‘Kinder’ it’s about Easter.
JoOp: Thankyou…
